More Blue Gradients and West Coast Hours For An East Coast Agency

The spoiler alert here is that after a wild 10 or so months, I bailed out on South Carolina agency Blue Acorn iCi to pursue another dream. While I was their Creative Director, however, I got to meet and manage a crew of UX assassins, as well as help close a few deals along the way. One of them was landing 1MM in business in my first 30 days. I wrote that to sound like it was all me… but it's fun to pretend. Note: much of this page is BAiCi focused - the client stuff is, as usual, under NDA.

Ripples And Waves

A large part of my job involved trying to invoke a brand style into Blue Acorn, as the agency had been through several reorganizations and re-modelings of their business structure and the Design org felt many of those ripples. I figured they were getting a little lost with the look and feel of things. Luckily, that’s my favorite place to navigate.

An Education Missed

One of the long term projects I kickstarted was a set of educational docs - both for our clientele and for internal use. While I’m as eye-rollingly exhausted with the design industry trying to over-explain itself - the idea here was to break it down into simple, scannable, “hey I’m not a designer” styled bullet points. Stop teaching, start showing. That kind of thing.

How To Build The Machine
One of the forcing functions for my hire at Blue Acorn iCi was to analyze their existing processes on managing design and selling it as a service of the agency, then make my recommendations on how it could improve. In my first 45 days I did just that, producing a 90+ page thesis on where I think things can go.

Topics discussed in painstaking thoroughness (with a dash of my usual bloviating) were focused primarily on two concepts: how to hire, manage, and motivate a team of senior creatives - and how the agency can estimate, present, and ship great work.
